A practical guide to using social media to grow your trades or construction business — even if you've never posted before.

Why Social Media Matters for Trades

Many trades and construction businesses dismiss social media as irrelevant to their industry. 'My customers don't find me on Instagram,' they say. That's a mistake.

Social media for trades isn't about going viral or building a massive following. It's about building trust, showcasing your work, staying top-of-mind with past customers, and generating referrals. When someone needs a plumber, they ask their friends for recommendations — and their friends check your social media to see if you're legit.

A trades business with an active, professional social media presence sends a powerful message: we're established, we're busy, and we take pride in our work.

Choosing the Right Platforms

You don't need to be on every platform. For trades and construction businesses, we recommend:

Facebook: Essential. Most of your customers are here. Use it for business updates, before/after photos, reviews, and community engagement. Set up a Facebook Business Page with all your services, hours, and contact information.

Instagram: Highly visual platform perfect for showcasing your work. Before/after photos, project progress shots, and short videos perform exceptionally well. Instagram is where younger homeowners look for trades.

LinkedIn: Important for B2B trades — commercial construction, industrial services, and businesses that work with other businesses. Use LinkedIn to connect with builders, project managers, and commercial clients.

TikTok/YouTube Shorts: Short-form video is powerful for trades. Quick tips, project highlights, and behind-the-scenes content can reach a large audience. Not essential but high potential if you're comfortable on camera.

Start with Facebook and Instagram. Add LinkedIn if you do commercial work. Add TikTok/YouTube only if you have the capacity for regular video content.

What to Post

Trades and construction businesses have some of the best social media content available — you just need to capture it. Here's what to post:

Before/After Photos: The single most powerful content type for trades. Take a photo before you start work and after you finish. Post them side by side. These posts consistently get the highest engagement and shares.

Project Progress: Document a job from start to finish. Post updates showing the progression. This shows the scope of your work and builds trust.

Behind the Scenes: Photos of your team, your vehicles, your equipment, and your workspace. People want to see the humans behind the business.

Tips and Advice: Quick, practical tips your customers will find useful. 'How to check if your hot water system needs replacing' or '3 signs your electrical wiring needs attention.' These position you as an expert.

Customer Reviews: Share screenshots of positive reviews and testimonials. Social proof is incredibly powerful.

Community Involvement: Photos of local events you sponsor, community projects you support, or local landmarks near your jobs. Shows you're a local business that cares.

Company Updates: New team members, new equipment, awards, certifications, or milestones. Shows your business is growing and successful.

Posting Frequency and Consistency

Consistency matters more than frequency. Posting 3 times per week consistently is better than posting daily for a month and then disappearing.

Recommended posting schedule:

Facebook: 3–4 posts per week Instagram: 3–4 feed posts per week, daily Stories LinkedIn: 2–3 posts per week (if active)

Use a content calendar to plan your posts in advance. Batch your content creation — take photos during the week and schedule posts for the following week. Tools like GoHighLevel, Buffer, or Meta Business Suite let you schedule posts in advance.

Aim for a mix of content types: 40% showcasing work, 20% tips and advice, 20% behind the scenes, 10% reviews/testimonials, 10% company updates.

Getting More Engagement

Posting is only half the job. To get results from social media, you need engagement:

Respond to Comments: When someone comments on your post, respond promptly. Every comment is an opportunity to build a relationship.

Use Local Hashtags: #SydneyPlumber #MelbourneElectrician #BrisbaneBuilder — use hashtags that include your service and location.

Tag Your Location: Always add your location to posts. This helps local customers find your content.

Ask Questions: End posts with a question to encourage comments. 'What's the biggest challenge with your current...' or 'Have you ever experienced...'

Share Other Local Businesses: Tag and share posts from complementary businesses — builders you work with, suppliers, or local events. They'll often return the favour.

Run Occasional Promotions: Offer a social media exclusive discount or free service call for followers. This rewards your audience and generates new enquiries.

Facebook and Instagram Ads for Trades

Organic social media builds your brand over time, but paid advertising can generate immediate leads. For trades businesses, we recommend:

Local Awareness Ads: Target people within your service area with ads showcasing your work and services. Low cost, high visibility.

Lead Generation Ads: Use Facebook's lead form ads to capture enquiries directly within Facebook. No need to send people to your website.

Remarketing Ads: Show ads to people who have visited your website or engaged with your social media. These are warm leads who already know your business.

Start with a small budget ($300–$500/month) and test different ad creatives and audiences. Scale what works.

Remember: social media ads for trades work best when combined with strong organic content. Your ads should look natural in people's feeds, not like traditional advertisements.

Measuring Results

Track these metrics monthly:

Follower Growth: Are you gaining followers steadily? Aim for 10–20 new followers per month.

Engagement Rate: Likes, comments, and shares per post. A 3–5% engagement rate is good for trades.

Website Clicks: How many people click through to your website from social media?

Enquiries: How many phone calls, messages, or form submissions come from social media?

Cost Per Lead (for paid ads): Total ad spend ÷ number of leads generated.

Most importantly, ask new customers how they found you. If social media comes up regularly, your strategy is working.

Social media for trades is a marathon, not a sprint. Consistent effort over 6–12 months will build a strong presence that generates ongoing enquiries and referrals. If you'd like help setting up your social media strategy, book a free assessment.
